| Adaptation to Climate Change for Sustainable Water Supply and Sanitation Services and Community Resilience Building in Coastal Areas |
Goal:
Enhance capacity of the selected communities to increase their resilience to the impacts of climate change
Objective:
To enhance the capacity of coastal communities towards the adverse effect of salinity.
Activities:
Considering the nature and extent of climate change impacts and the necessary efforts to enhance resilience, Bangladesh adopted the Bangladesh Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan (BCCSAP) in 2009. The Community Climate Change Project (CCCP) emerged as a component of BCCRF, providing funding opportunities for civil society and NGO sector projects.
CCCP worked closely with selected NGOs to develop adaptation strategies for addressing climate risks. A substantial body of evidence demonstrated approaches to tackling climate risks beyond traditional livelihood projects.
Amidst this challenging climate scenario, issues related to health and hygiene due to inadequate safe water supply and poor sanitation infrastructure became increasingly severe, particularly in salinity-affected coastal islands. In response, NGO Forum initiated interventions under the CCCP project to enhance community capacity in mitigating the adverse effects of salinity.
Overall Impact:
✔ Sustainable livelihoods through long-term income generating opportunities.
✔ Women’s empowerment through engagement in sanitation-related intervention.
✔ Enhanced agricultural productivity by using modern agro-technologies, tools and methods.
✔ Resilient communities with better coping mechanisms to climate change challenges.
